EUROLAKES
Integrated Water Resources Management for Important Deep European Lakes and their Catchment Areas
Duration: 2000-2003

Large deep lakes play an important role for the water supply of several regions in Europe. While there exist detailed water management strategies for many small lakes and catchments, these reservoirs have not been subject to integrated interdisciplinary approaches yet.
One major objective of this project was the qualitative and quantitative identification of conflicting uses of the lakes and their catchments. The annual or even longer-term evolution of key processes in some important lakes (Lake of Constance, Lake Geneva, Lac du Bourget, Loch Lomond) was intensively investigated. As a consequence of the project, recommendations were given for the protection of the large lakes by European legislation and guidelines.
