Wind Fields

Simulation of the ground level wind field near Bingen

Wind is a quantity which is locally extremely variable. On a regional scale it is mainly the relief that is causing this variability. Reliable wind measurements are only available for very few single spots. On the other hand the knowledge of the average wind conditions and their future development is in many aspects desirable.

On a larger scale it is mainly the relief that causes this spacial variability of the wind. For instance, in low mountain regions locations at a distance of merely a few hundred metres can show completely different patterns in wind direction and speed. Knowledge of the local distributions is not only of economical interest to many business fields (energy, traffic, water, insurance,...) but also essential for dispersion statistics which are needed for immission forecasts.

In urban areas awkward building structures can significantly amplify the wind. This decreases the so called wind comfort and can become a serious hazard to pedrestrians or cyclists. For small scale immission forecasts representative wind statistics at approximately housetop level are required.

Public authorities, companies and consultants cherish our experience and qualification as one of the leading providers of applied simulations of wind conditions and the compilation of synthetic wind and dispersion statistics. Not only do we offer complex micro- and mesoscale flow models but we also conduct wind tunnel experiments if needed.
